We have successfully completed the first part of the two-part Virginia honor band process. The James River band program is one of only 3 in the state to have earned honor band recognition every year the program has been in existence. To obtain honor band distinction for the 18th year consecutively, the symphonic band must achieve a superior rating at the Concert Band Festival, held in March at LC. Byrd (exact date to be announced).
A BIG THANK YOU to all the parents who came out to support our band!!! We had a record number of parents at the school cheering as the buses left for States, and an even BIGGER, record-setting crowd at Massaponax High School woopin' and hollerin' , waving banners and pom poms, flying balloons, and ringing cowbells. Thanks to all who decorated, provided sweets and treats, and offered cheerful moral support. It was a SUPERIOR success!!
Sam Burns, I want to thank you and your crew for the OUTSTANDING JOB you all did navigating the logistical changes necessitated by the freaky weather. Before any of us knew it was Saturday yet, you had already checked the weather, the Massoponax band website, googled maps, and formulated a plan . . . and a back-up plan, and a back-up plan to the back-up plan. It was your expertise and foresight that allowed for such a smooth adjustment to the indoor competition. Not only that, the crew braved relentless rain, gusting winds, stinging sleet, and numbing cold to make sure that our band was best positioned to avoid the elements and get to the staging area with precision timing. I continue to be awed by your dedication, sacrifice, and pure commitment to this band. Thank you.
Lastly, thank you, to our band director and band students, for all the "backin' it up and doin' it again." It certainly paid off in the most SUPERIOR way! Thank you, Mr. Cottrill, for all the time you have put into this program and your commitment to quality. Thank you for believing in the students and bringing out the potential in each one of them. But most importanly, thank you for showing our students what can happen when they believe in themselves.
By order of the band director and as a reward for your success, band rehearsals will only be held on Thursdays, November 3 and November 10, 2:30-3:30. No run throughs on Friday.
Congratulations again to everyone for a job well done,
-Maribeth Cowan
